The Crux of the biscuit is the apostrophe: The song "Stinkfoot" (Frank Zappa, RIP) juxtaposes man and dog, aesthetic from sensual, ethical versus animal. Just as the apostrophe-shaped crease in an English, Southern, or, for that matter, a dog biscuit points to an imagined separation between upper and lower, so does the apostrophe in "can't, don't, shouldn't, couldn't, wouldn't, isn't", etc. poin...t to an assumed"not". The "not", the bar, the limits and boundaries which we humans create, then impose on the animals and our animal nature. Perhaps this is human nature, the dark disgust for existence per se, for the heady smelly mixture of life and decay which man's best friend finds so entrancing. In short, the stink isn't in your toes, nor in your nose, but in your mind. Joe Carroll - DeMatha High School English Literature teacher. - updated 2014-03-07 15:40:54 UTC
