I have the Keyboard Magazine from 1986, its very interesting to hear this kind of stories, thanks for sharing and Happy Holidays to you and your family!
It's always nice to pick up a story you haven't heard before. I didn't know about that echo chamber. My studio at home, when it was first finished, had a cement floor. Before I got it carpeted and moved all my stuff in, I played my acoustic guitar in there and it sounded really amazing. Unfortunately, I can't have my cake and eat it too - I have a studio now but no echo room.
Dweezil,
Just so we'll know, can you give an approximation of the size of the room? I'm interested because I have a friend who has a studio in his basement. The house was built in the 50's and has a separate Bomb Shelter that I've always told him he needs to clean out and use as an Echo chamber. To quote Donald Fagen, maybe we can take him on a "New Frontier"...
I've seen pictures of one of the echo chambers in a magazine and apparently it had to have a window put in it due to l.a. Regulations saying if it's a room it has to have a window.
The techniques used to recreate the chamber sounds mindblowing,
great stuff though.
Echo chamber? How big is this place? I mean the whole downstairs of the zappa home? how big is the home? of course asking too much would be creepy but I have always wondered just how big the place really is.
Thanks for posting this. I've always wanted to know a little more about the reverb and echo chamber at UMRK, and the miking techniques employed. Very informative, to say the least. More happy holiday wishes to you and your loved ones as well.
Far out man.
