So today. . .I break out The Allaman Brother's Live at The Fillmore CD set, a set I got from the local library. I open the case and pull out the first CD. Hit play.

Nothing.

So, after checking the batteries, I hit the " play " button again. At this point in time, I'm thinking that maybe it would be a good thing to get another CD player sometime in the near future.

After a few seconds, the player proceeds. Then . . . stops. THEN starts up again. Then stops. Then it starts up again. Of course, I had not touched any buttons for it to perform the previous few starts and stops. I feel the player has a mind of its own. THIS is not good since technology is SUPPOSED to follow OUR orders, not its own. I silently curse Panasonic. . .

Finally, the sounds of The Allaman Brother's " Stateboro's Blues " fills my headphones. And the next 85 some odd minutes, I am transported to that time of impressive musicianship. Of course the highlight for me is " The Whipping Post. " Frank did right covering this love song of sorts for his 84 tour. But The Allaman Brothers version is playing in my head at that moment.

After this song is done, I hit the " stop " button and the second disc stops. Then it starts again. Now I'm worried. Should I destroy the player? Should I curse the player and hope it follows my teenage demands? No. . I simply hit the " stop " button again and pull the disc out. I then go about looking for another CD to play. I find one of my complilation CDs I make for my family which features a variety of music. I,of course, make these discs simply for entertainemt purposes. AND it doesn't help matters that I often forget what songs they have on them since I don't keep track of the songs. I make them on a whim, for fun.

However, I am desparate to put in another disc, just to see if my satanic player is broken. I pull an umarked disc, possibly made a few years ago and has no song titles on it. It could be empty for all I know. I load it, hit play. . .the player moves and goes into " random " mode. This creeps me out. . .the player gets song number #5 ready. . .

Song #5? It's  " Whipping Post " from FZ's Does Humor Belong In Music.

YEOW!

David - dunno if this'll help but some years ago my brother bought a new VCR (yes, it really was some time ago).

It worked fine for a week and then started doing the sorts of things your CD is doing. Stopping of its own volition, starting when it wasn't meant to etc, you get the picture.

He brought it back to the store from whence it came. The guy there didn’t even look at it, he just apologised and handed my brother a brand new replacement.

It worked find for about a week and then it too started to play up . It was replaced by a third unit which also did the same thing.

By this stage my bro’ was most unhappy. Not just because of the hassle but also because it was a 2 hour round trip to the store and he was beginning to feel that he was being fobbed off with replacements from a faulty batch.

So, back to the store. This time the guy there asked my brother to wait and called their service engineer’s cell and asked him to come in to the store. He did and took the haunted VCR into his workshop at the rear of the store.

After 10 minutes or so he emerged and asked my brother “Do you have any young children at home?”Read more
