Folks,
As an FYI Charlie Boswell has a TWEET that informs a short DZ ROXY Vid excerpt was shown at NAB and that he will be "headed back to Austin to finish up post and final Blu-ray production on "Roxy" as well."
Hello Dweezil,
I'm pretty excited about your upcming visit to Moncton New Brunswick. Your work is really awesome and inspiring. Thanks for making me relive those great tunes that rocked my adolescence. The whole band is truly amazing!
Cheers!
In terms of stabalizing footage in an automated fashion the Mercalli plugin-software does a tremendous job. It is made my proDad and has a Vegas plugin container interface. However I can only speak for it in the Adobe Suite as I composite far more than I edit. For more advanced rescues yes you would have to go in frame-by-frame tracking although I have gotten good stabilizations with Imagineer's mocha. You know what, send me some footage and I'll try to sort it out. ;)
Please tell me it's true! FZ's Roxy show that I've listened to - oh - about a million times I will finally get to see!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can't wait to see you again at the Capitol Theater in NY. Just trying to decide if my wife and I will bring the kids (6 & 11) for their 3rd ZPZ show - third row in front of the stage last tour!
Speaking as an editor it's nice to read about someone learning the technical as well as the aesthetic process of editing. You better than anyone knows where the cut needs to "breathe" as you well put it. And having been there in person I look forward to seeing it again through your cut.
DZ - "P.S. The FZ ROXY audio is being assembled - tapes are being baked - so that the process of synchronization can occur. The film negative was transferred to Hi Def and the audio is captured at the highest resolution from the original analog tapes. YES this is getting underway... Had to get this one done to clear the way for the ROXY And ELSEWHERE film."

100% Positive development here. When I had interviewed Joe Travers back in 2005 that should have yielded enough of general optimism of feasibility one day taking place but what is so remarkable is that technology and budgets have finally caught up to taking those original video and audio masters where FZ just never had the time and money to complete this project.
From my perspective this is just the way things always worked, Frank had so many projects going on at once in some form of "work in progress". Hunchentoot, Thing Fish & Uncle Meat are examples of two uncompleted projects and one that took another 2 decades after an announcement on the Mothermania inner album sleeve in March of 1969.

In regards to the FZ ROXY Video project we know Frank had done some digital processing on the original film reels. Now today we can get the original live analog tapes to be transferred as DZ states "at the highest resolution".For those that had still asked questions the ROXY LP masters include overdubs that are different from "original live tapes" so the statement DZ made should already answer that. I look forward to hear how the original live tapes will sound "Sans Overdubs".
Now all that baking, synchronization and other production related things. For those that have not seen the 40Th Anniversary Woodstock Blue Ray the additional disk contains so much interview and documentation material that explains the large amount of work that went into the original film and anniversary projects. Originally tables upon tables of editing systems each having their own team of engineers is what was required to get that film completed. Synchronization of the audio was a nightmare. The amount of film and audio in FZs ROXY, where the quantity had been explained in my 2005 interview is not much different.I just don't think FZ ever had a budget to complete it. Time, Technology & Budgets have finally caught up to this long awaited Holy Grail.
Great work. I would love to do this stuff. IOt must be very nerve wracking baking FZ tapes. I personally will enjoy bot the ZPZ and FZ versions of the Roxy shows. I can take any amount of FZ music.
I completely forgot about this. This would look great in my Christmas stocking !!
So... Where is it?????
love these details, looking forward to both projects :)
Yowza!!!!!
Good news, Dweez!

Tape Baking

I have read and heard this term "baking tapes" for many years. What exactly does that entail?
anyone?
