Had a great time at the Chick Corea & Gary Burton with the Harlem String Quartet show at the Blue Note last night. While my budget does not allow me to attend all 10 of Chic Corea's bands that are appearing at The Blue Note this month I am enjoying the celebration this month as much as any of the many times I have seen Chick since the late 70s. For many fortunate concert goers it is 50 years since Chick first came onto the music scene in NYC. A relevant context for the celebration of Chick's music is where Chick refers to each of his musical collaborations and works existing in their own unique universe.
Having had the opportunity to talk to Chick about this concept after the show upon meeting up I first noted his views, I asked Chick to expand on the possibility of a scientific view of the concept being applied, where each composition and arrangement are unique planets, where each planet has a two dimensional aspect and gets projected in the form of a hologram within it's own universe. Chick responded "it all depends on your definition of a universe", where upon I replied in reiterated form that each composition and arrangement is of it's own universe, it expands outwardly from a bang, in space and time.
The question and response, Chick was all smiles. The passion is as strong as I have seen many have at any point in life. While we were exactly on the same page I could tell his response was for all at the dressing room area to hear, I extend that to anyone reading this Blog, of how we as individuals look at our definitions of the universe. I see far too many so called fans of music pigeon holing artistic intent, so Chick's statement gives the context, questioning the "listening intent" of the listener. We know what he as an artist thinks but what about the listener?
I then went on to state how much I appreciated him being in Frank Zappa's Universe, In Dweezil Zappa's Universe, the collaboration where that within itself became unique universes he has worked in. I gave thanks for not only what had transpired in the two months of touring and but also hopes of future collaborations to come. Chick responded how much fun he had. He was in such a great mood. The "Chick performing with Dweezil" topic came up several times in the two after-shows greetings. Chick responded each time that it was really fun. Would love to see a Cick & Dweezil do a record together, where they write new music and revisit works of Chick, Frank & Dweezil. That's a "Whole Lotta Universal" domains.
