Fred,
You called yourself out. There is a lot going on with this rig. More than meets the eye. It has also changed a lot since these photos. Even so, if you saw what was really going on and had a look at the signal flow schematic and then looked at the wiring and the space involved you'd actually change your mind from a mess to a work of art. There is a method to the madness.
The problems with stomp boxes are there are MULTIPLE POINTS OF FAILURE, 60 HZ gets amplified, "stomping" can cause horrible transients and a fault results in NO SOUND.
I thought about these problems and thought of a solution, fortunately I went to another image of your rig and found out you had the solution! ( ... and I thought I had a new idea ...)
The Effect Gizmo is a brilliant idea! No single point of failure! Cabling noise is at a minimum, and you get transient muting.
You could program the midi for backup connections so that if you loose a box you can bypass it, or just hit a button on the unit.
YET, its not like a matrix switch that complicates things by having too many possible connections.
The wiring looks gruesome, but I now understand how this can work as a touring piece of gear. It could be improved, but the Effect Gizmo makes this a workable situation.
This looks terrible. I can't see this working reliably even on a local gig, let alone a tour.Suggestions ...mount weird boxes on a slide out tray, Mount equipment "right side up", use a rackmount power bar, center cable needs restraints and better path.
I've seen huge studios with less gear than that.. Just like Master Dweezil said: "a work of art"

Sorry, I'm wrong on this one...

I deserve a verbal pummelling on this one!!!
SHAAAROON!!! I'M SO CONFUSED!!!
