I'm not sure where to post this, but here is what I would like to say:
The Frank Zappa Day events in Baltimore, MD was a true celebration of Frank's genius in every way. It was a totally classy affair from the beginning to the end. The early morning Q&A with Gail, accompanied by Dweezil, Ahmet, Diva, and her "other son" Joe Travers was fantastic. The audience was so polite and Gail and the others were generous with their time, their stories, and their answers.
A lot of new projects to look forward to from the vault including the Roxy & Elsewhere DVD, re-releases of the original Honker Home Videos, and more great music. Dweezil spoke at length about the transformative process his guitar playing underwent while preparing to perform with Zappa Plays Zappa and I felt so moved by his words.
Gail revealed that her general problem with Frank Zappa cover bands is their failure to procure a performance license to have a "revue" that consists solely of Frank Zappa's works. So if you want to have a concert of only Frank Zappa music, ask Gail first.

To clarify, if you have a band and you want to sneak a Zappa tune or two into your set, those performances are covered by the venue's general ASCAP/BMI licenses. If you're billing an all-Zappa event, Gail needs to get paid...and she should!
We also learned that Frank loved Christmas trees and that Ahmet was amazing at decorating them. Ahmet in particular was laugh-out-loud hilarious, but that's Ahmet for ya! :)
And Diva likes to crochet lovely things.
After the Q&A was the statue unveiling, which was wonderful. Then ZPZ played an amazing concert! Dweezil's solos were fantastic and the band just sounded great. They were able to conjure up the sound of the time period that each of the songs were recorded but with their own signature stamp.
My only criticism is that Scheila didn't get enough soloing time compared to the vibraphonist whose solos were a little on the trite side. However, the best solos were by Dweezil who played at least 2 that just completely blew my mind. He was obviously feeling very inspired! But I think Scheila would have given him more of a run for his money if she had the opportunity. Jamie Kime also played a very good solo when he had his moment. Again, it was a generous long set full of crowd-pleasers and songs for the casual "Dinah Moe Humm" fan and the more sophisticated "RDNZL" fan. And Joe Travers is just the most kick-a*s drummer ever.
After the concert I went to Riptide on the Bay with some FZ fans from Facebook and Cal Schenkel and it was a very lovely time.
It was a wonderful Frank Zappa Day on Frank Zappa Way and I hope they do it again!
