A funny thing happened when I mentioned the "Z" word
About Group
I think it's happened to us all, the conversation is going fine then you mention the word "Zappa" and everything changes. I bet even Dweezil has stories! ?
Ever tried crossing the border and mentioning you are going to a Zappa show? You want to talk about a change in demeanor. Even if you try to avoid saying the dreaded “Z” word, they have techniques to draw it out. One time while crossing the border, I said “Dweezil Zappa and his band”, not wanting to say the “Z” word twice, and found myself in an immigration nightmare. Would it have been different if I said I was attending a Barry Manilow show? Blood Sweat and Tears?
They even lost our passports for over an hour; until I mentioned that we were not being processed to immigration staff. They told us we could be arrested for trying to cross and thrown in jail. Isn’t this what living is all about!
Or have you ever had a discussion with your girlfriend about Bamboozled by Love and try to explain to her that the song is of a sexual nature and not a misogynistic rant about cutting a woman’s head off. Try to win that argument fella’s!
Have you ever been called a Zappa Groupie because you attend so many shows?
The “Z” word is not a bad word, nor should it be. It should stand alone like the mighty apostrophe and be respected.
I would love to read your stories, good bad, interesting, informative ... you decide
music is the best!

whenever the Z word is mentioned it gets me into a long discussion and I usually can't stop.....Don't get me going.........
wow Hall of Fame weekend on the Radio and the DJ introduces FZ and played he Joes Garage ... cool ! following the song the DJ went on " I should explain to you who FZ was .... " and he mentioned the huge collection of material, the song writing ability and his political activism .... he finished off saying "we could use a guy like that around today" ....... ahhhhhh YA .... but great to hear FZ up here on the radio 97.7 HTZ FM
Just heard "Call any Vegetable" on my morning news program ... Peaches en Regalia yes but CAV ... cool !
Another Zappa-related thing that was pretty good was when I went to the local CD store and asked the girl behind the counter if they had Zappa CDs they could order for me and I asked her which ones, and you should've seen the looks this girl was making while reading some titles like Burnt Weeny Sandwich, Weasels Ripped My Flesh, Chunga's Revenge and some other of the more bizarre titles... it was a very funny moment, for me at least.
When the DavidLetterman show has new skit(or whatever they are called) PaulShaffer will sometimes write a little diddy based on another song. About a year ago I saw one called 'People and their Vegetables' . Paul kept singing- 'people and their vegetables!' Over and over-with the band in tow. The notes were different but the tempo and progression was from 'CallAnyVegetable'. I was a little shocked, but then I remembered Paul was musical director on SNL when FZ was on in 76'&78'. Way to go Paul! nice tribute.
well talk about haters, the haters at work, to whom I dedicated Dumb all Over laid me off last week ! let the games begin
I believe he's one of those folks who thinks his opinion is the right one. The type of ego I'd imagine one gets after having worked with John Cage very closely.
wow..How can this person even claim to be a professor of music when he interjects his own personal opinions? He should be reported...that does not sound like teaching to me.
I'm in a music theory class this semester and I had a music history/music appreciation class last semester. Both are taught by the same professor. The first day of class when I had the history/appreciation class, he aksed people to name composers from different eras (the class focused on Classical music). When he got to the Modern era I was thinking I could either say Holst or Zappa. Being the fan I am, I said Zappa and he looked me dead in the eyes and said "Wrong." I couldn't believe it. But then he said he pretty much dislikes music in general (which is outrageous). So now I bring up music I know he hates and knows little to nothing about when we talk one on one. I mentioned how "Toads of the Short Forest" has all the different time signatures and he said "Well, he just wanted to make noise" He's got a very outsider opinion on everything. A bit off topic but he saw I was reading a book on Thelonious Monk and he asked what type of jazz Monk played and I told him be-bop. He said "that's just playing as many notes as you can in as little amount of time, right?" My blood was boiling. I just want him to hear The Yellow Shark a…Read more
