I went to a Allan Holdsworth guitar clinic today at Carvin. Jimmy Haslip/bass and Virgil Donati/drums, were there also. 90minutes of discussion and music. They played about eight songs.
Someone asked Allan about spending time with Frank and he said: He was very nice to me - and he let me use his studio!
Just put a Tremol-no in my Carvin strat-copy. Wow!!!!
That plus some Bill Lawrence L-280's have made this a killer guitar, and I saved 40% by building the kit version. (GK1T).
Anyway, the Tremol-no is highly recommended... lives up to the hype and works as advertised... one of those "why didn't they think of it sooner?" type accessories.
i think the previous owner had it used it tuned down so when i bought it and tuned it up the intonation went out and the action raised.
i think the guy that did the setup tweaked the nut a little bit and it plays great now the pickups sound really nice too i prefer the look of the pickguard on the 61 reissue too as opposed to the one thats on the standard, i think it's worth the little extra it cost than what the standards we're going for as well.
Any idea what was done during setup to make that guitar more stable?
I have nice action on mine, great intonation etc. but the neck is just, rubbery, for lack of a better term.
Also, after a particularly hot humid summer here, I had to have a few of the inlays on the first few frets re-glued. *sigh*
It's much better than it was, but from your comment and others online, it looks like the 61 reissue is the way to go, especially since it seems to be the only one with Classic '57 pickups. I'm not a fan of the 490/498 series in so many Gibsons.
i had an SG special it was one of the faded ones but that had a chunky neck too it was a nice sounding guitar but i wasn't keen on the neck.
i sold that and later bought a 61 reissue the neck on it is a lot better with a slimmer feel and it is very light i bought it second hand and had trouble with it staying in tune but took it for a setup and it now plays great and stays in tune really well.
Very interesting to be sure steve. For me personally, glad I previewed before I purchased. A little too atonal for my taste. I tend to agree with Nigel Tufnel about fusion..."those guys are great players but wouldn't it be more pleasing if they were all playing the same tune".
Has anyone heard "The History of Now" by Matt Resnicoff? I just got the CD from Amazon today & can't stop spinning it! Produced by Mike Keneally (who also plays many of the instruments on the album), liner notes by Steve Vai... and amazing, genre-defying music of course! Check it out!
Got my Carvin store mailer w/ Allan Holdsworth on the cover. After I see him play with ZPZ, I'm sure I'll be checking out the in-store clinic in Santa Ana on Feb. 25th. They are giving away a guitar amp, and I have a friend that lives within walking distance. Sounds like a good day for a jam.
Can someone explain what Dweezil means by "following the high frequency envelope"? I am at what exactly these Dynaflangers are doing besides sounding awesome. See below...
Of Dynaflangers: In stereo, one unit needs to be set for flange with maximum modulation, (which makes it sound out of tune - in a good way) and the other following the high frequency envelope, (almost like a phaser mixed with a formant filter), then they need to be squeezed with considerable compression from the Aphex units. Once you do that, you play with your wah pedal and it further tweezes the phase of the signal resulting in that unique sound we're all familiar with.
me, me, me, me...9 times...ahaha... what a crazy video !!!

Regarding newer modellers, have any of you tried the Kemper Profiling Amp or the Boss GT-100 yet?

I'd love an SG but cant afford a real one...
Does anyone know if the Epiphone versions are any good?
Thanks!

@chris - thanks for sharing the Johnny Hiland video! Love his phrasing & his chops! Swingin'!

I figure there must be a few SG players on here.
I have an SG and am not happy with some aspects of it. It's a 2007 "Special with EMG's", and was part of their Guitar of the Week program.
I'd like to find something with a less chunky neck, and that balances well on the knee or on a strap. My SG is neck heavy.
A little more tuning stability would be nice too - are all SG necks kind of wobbly?
Are there particular models you guys have had great luck with? Extra points if they come with PLEK'ed frets.
thanks
Chris

I'm not much of a country fan, but boy do I wish I could play this well, this tasty, this quick ...
