Just got tickets to see Eric Johnson. He is playing in a converted movie theater that holds maybe 500 people and is walking distance from my house. It is really exciting to have something like this to look forward to.
The other day I played the remastered version of Boil That Dust Speck by Mike Keneally and again noticed "the making of" dvd in it. I decided to play it for the first time. Holy SH IT! It's better and much longer than the cd. Buy it! You won't regret it. The cd might mystify you a bit, but everything on that dvd more than makes up for it. *****+
@ Gary...last time I checked, Mark was not in Edgars current band. I saw EWG in 2003 and Mark tore it up, along with Chris Fraser on drums. They also filmed the show. It's called 'live at the Galaxy'.
@John...I think Johnny is almost completely blind now.
I'd like to here a bit more of the concert. I heard he was touring with Rick Derringer and Pat Travers. And but also was Dweezil Zappa's old bass player "The Bass Cowboy" Mark Meadows playing with Edgar Winter's band?
Saw Edgar Winter live last night. Very enjoyable and glad to say he seems to be ageing much better than his brother. He was very active, mobile and entertaining. Johnny not so much.
Sorry Ton, not a huge Buckethed fan, I respect him as a great player but could never relate to the 'bucket' or the content of most of the music he was associated with early on. Maybe a victim of poor timing or a poor stage name. But who knows maybe he will gain some respect for his obvious technical prowes in time.
PS: I have however heard his name come up in conversation on this site before so you are not the only fan out there!
I have just joined the DZWorld and enjoy the positive attitude here (as opposed to KUR lots of the time).
This group is a great idea, it is always good to find out about music one hasn't heard of yet - and I was wondering if there are any other Zappa fans here who also know and love Buckethead. He is one h**l of a guitarplayer with a very distinct personal sound and unique way of playing. And a HUGE catalog of music that is extremely varied.
(As I live in a culturally somewhat retarded area of the world I haven't yet met in person another Buckethead fan, would be great if some of you here enjoy his stuff as much as I do!)
If you don't know him, try and check these video's out - two very different tracks to give you an idea.
Yeah John, I previewed some of the tracks and got the same impression about Satch's playing but I haven't got a chance to really listen to the whole thing yet. I'm not aware of "II" either.
New Chickenfoot is out. It is good, but Joe seems a little restrained in his playing. Comes with 3D glasses and an assortment of band pictures. They are calling this one Chickenfoot III. Did I miss one or are they counting the DVD?
Well I've read every comment so far and no mention of WILCO ! Their latest line-up includes Nels Cline one of the most interesting guitarist on the scene next to Dweezil in a group that keeps knocking out 'critically acclaimed' albums almost twenty years on. The group spawned from 'Uncle Tupelo' with Jeff Tweedy being the axle. The live concert film 'Ashes of American Flags' is a great place to start, 'I Am Trying To Break Your Heart' is a film every musician should see, and I couldn't possibly pick one album to 'start' with but 'Yankey Hotel Foxtrot' is where I began my love affair with this band.
I saw Allan ( with skinny Terry Ted Bozzio-that cute little drummer ) last January when they played in Oakland. In fact, Tony Levin was playing bass with them and the group played all improv music. Not one piece was written down. Terry said on the first night ( of the four night stay ) that the group was planning to release the music in 2011 so I'm still waiting. I love Allan. My brother got me the Atavachron disc last year for Christmas. Just amazing. . . I have some Shawn Lane stuff as well and just love his music. I have his VHS lesson videos and learned so much from them. I'll never play like that ever but it's great to see the master at work. I remember seeing a you tube video a few years ago where Shawn and Allan both met each other. I don't remember seeing a jam out of it. Both guys are mind blowing to listen to.
Any day now we will celebrate the first new album by John Lydon's PiL!!
That's very, very good new to me - are there any other PiL addicts amongst Zappa-connaisseurs??
@ John, The only thing i can say to that is
.

I heard that Buckethead got a call from Sharon to join Ozzy's band.Loose the mask and bucket and you've got the job. He declined.

Well, real clever of them-thousands of hours probably wasted searching the net for it!!
Chickenfoot III is a joke. There is/was no II.

Checkout the Sheepdogs. They sound more like a southern rock band but are from Canada.
BCC II is as good as the first. Give it a listen, you won't be disappointed.

I am a HUGE fan of Allan Holdsworth. He is beyond a genius - so glad to see his popularity is on the rise again.
