It's just words
I have yet to use the Patriot Box Office for HD Video.
Soon as I get my Panny HD Camcorder out of the box and start using it I will give you feedback but I am sure it will suffice.
Fan noise is not an issue as I keep the device in an enclosure.
If I did not put it in my list of Equipment I have a Niles FM-1 System Cooling Module. The Niles Fan(s) noise is no more or less than that device where I see no issue on overall fan noise of both components combined.
Previous ??? My OHM Walsh 2s from my memory are either late 1982 or early 83'. Before than I had Wharfedales & before that I had Large Wood Enclosure Advents originally purchased by my brother in 1971/2.
It seems to good to be true. $89.00! I think my biggest problem would be fan noise. But for $89 it's worth it. Are you happy with video quality?
nachtout,
If you are into Hi-End Media Servers such as Niveus I can understand demo if you are going to spend several thousand dollars but with the likes of these inexpensive small HD Media Servers you might want to consider to just go ahead and give a Patriot Box Office a try for $89 available at Newegg. There are other similar devices from other manufacturers but for the money the internal hard drive support is a nice feature.
FYI you need an external USB 2.0 or internal hard(2.5" SATA SSD/HDD) to store your music, pictures & movies.

Good point about the DAC on lossless files. I need to find a retail store that will let me demo a media server at home. My system:
Denon AVP8000, Rotel RCD-1072, Denon DCM370 Changer, Rotel 990BX(Main Amp), B&K ST-202+(Center Amp), Phase Linear 400(Rear Amp, circa 1972), Snell CV (Front L+R), Kef Q9C (Center), Klipsch KB 1.1 (Rear), Acoustic Research Sub.
In storage: Kef 104.2, Musical Fidelity A3cr pre-amp, Rotel RB870BX, Linn Basic
The Denon AVP800 has a beautiful 2 channel sound, equal if not better than the Musical Fidelity. Kef's need a tweeter. Linn needs a stepping motor.
I dig the OHM Walsh's sound, have had several friend's that had them. What year are yours?
Check out this guy's system:

The Ampzilla is back!
I've just bought a new "time vampire" better known as a ps3 I've wanted to get one for a while but they were on offer today so I bit the bullet I'm not a gaming enthusiast but it will be useful for everything else you can use it for.
I just hope it's easy to set everything up.
Nachtout,
I had been looking into hi-end media servers from Niveus several years back but these new inexpensive media servers which cost only $100 in comparison to several thousand for a Niveus is a worthwhile investment. A good DAC is going to do it's job on lossless media files regardless of what the server is and the Patriot Box Office has been working fine as a Lossless Media Server regardless if I use my external DAC from Behringer or DAC conversion with the AVR.
I am a bit disappointed that the Patriot Box does not play the hundreds of WMA Lossless content I have encoded such as the Zappa catalog and some other artists so I have quite a bit of WMA Lossless to FLAC converting to do. I would guess 10% of all of my Media Server Audio is in WMA Lossless format that I need to covert to FLAC but the Patriot Box Office is a good device that I would recommend. Scrolling through the library does take a little time. The internal hard drive option is a desirable feature but presently I use an external Hard Drive. I do keep several thousands of titles in a slightly compressed format to save some space but all my Zappa, Stravinsky, Varese…Read more

The physical media is always there in my library but the convenience of playing CD quality lossless audio without rummaging through several thousand CDs is quite nice. I still play all my DVD-A & SACD physical Media using my Denon but for all my other Audio for the most part I have been using the Patriot Box Office. Excluding my WMA Lossless headaches that are resolved as previously stated with conversion I have had 100% satisfactory results .
