About Group

Can The Dweezil Zappa World Community help get the HRTZ out and about of Ugly Radio? Anyone who so joins this group may use the original Music Is The Best BLOG so as to linking the concept to all your Space Monkey links within this community and elsewhere. May the powers of this community help to get FZ/DZPZ music to be played in Commercial Vehicles. A common cause to help remove decades of controlling levers to that of higher ambient domains. If I may reiterate the Music Is The Best! BLOG Body Contents....... While "The Rock & Roll Journalistic Profession" has been somewhat kind to Dweezil Zappa Plays Zappa over the last several years the "Lever" that is the lack of Commercial Airwave Support to Zappa Music is something Music Is The Best does not deserve. Hopefully at some point a community effort can be made as to Crush All Request Boxes for Clear Channel and Independent Radio Programming across the world. If The Ambassador-at-Large may at this time take the liberty during this first BLOG to address a Frank Zappa quote that many of NY Finest Crazy Type Persons know too well. HOWIE ZOWIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was asked to sit in at a local radio station tonight & spun nearly 2 hours of Zappa - almost all original vinyl. We were inundated with calls & requests. The overwhelming response has yielded an offer for me to do a weekly two hour Zappa show on 88.9 WERU which will stream live!

Hi all. I just joined this group and I am kind of confused by the description. Just my opinion here, which I hope sparks conversation.

After 40 years of radio not playing Frank, why an effort to get them to play FZ or DZPZ now?  In truth, commercial radio DOESN’T DESERVE to play Zappa music!

1. Zappa music has proved that it will outlive anything played on commercial radio - especially what passes for Top 40 and pop music today. I haven’t listened to FM radio in over 30 years. What sells today is almost 90% synthesized “robot” voices and computer drums. It’s sickening, and this is what America is requesting?  Again, in my opinion, commercial radio doesn’t deserve Zappa music.

2. Zappa music already proved that it will live forever, mostly due to fans passing it to the next generation. We also have new stuff from the FZ Vault, Zappa Radio, and Internet sources like DZW, YouTube, Barfko Swill, etc.

3. I’d love to have an all-Zappa station on satellite radio. I don’t know how the family feels about that or what deals would need to be struck. But with fan backing, it would be an awesome way to have Zappa on the airwaRead more

Frank Zappa Late Night with David Letterman June 16, 1983

http://youtu.be/DjMO_ewZxIQ

I just received an E-Mail from a Zappa fan I used to go to FZ shows with notifying me of a Youtube posting when I had appeared on David Letterman with Frank Zappa. Personally I never felt the need to edit the video and post it.

While I have talked of this video from time to time in various internet domains I always thought Frank's dialog of his artistic integrity, how he was fair and honest to his work and with his fans was the important message.

I have always been honored that Frank chose me as an example of where he directed that artistic integrity. The interview contains dialog of his business model of sorts,  how he ran his business, how he was true to his art and to his fans. For those that need to know details of the production a portion of my appearance as a guest is missing from this edit. If that were not enough David Letterman had initially informed me that I would interview Frank Zappa. I find it fair to say that David Letterman did not particularly like someone getting more laughs from their  improv than he received from his opening monRead more

@ CMBG,

Please go on regarding "Room Tone"

From my perspective it exist not only in moments of silence but in each variant degree of amplitude in all instrumentation throughout the entire program. The Room Tone is always there and each room has individual acoustic characteristics. That can even change in a given venue when the venue is remodeled or the statistical density of the audience changes. I have had a specific room very much on my mind in the last year and but also before ZPZ started. I will just leave it at that.

BTW - I think we both have objections to overt audience chatter affect on room tone.

GMBG

Room tone is critical for one who cuts and splices tape (as Frank did).  If one wanted to insert a bit of silence into a reel, one wouldn't use blank tape - that would sound unnatural, so one would take an appropriate length of "room tone" tape and insert it where the silence was needed and it would sound natural.  20 years ago I did a project of recording audio lessons on tape.  We always ran room tone -- I had one lecturer who spoke so fast and had so many run-on sentences that he was not understandable. We sat for hours with razor blades and splicing tape splicing in room tone to give "air" between sentences and pauses. Room tone also helped set up EQ.  What made Frank so remarkable is that he cared for every aspect of his art -- even the inherent sound of the room in which he played.  "This is gotta be right, I want all the right notes."  It is said that the mark of a true musical genius, is not that he or she can play all the right notes, but that the artist knows the importance of the silences in between the notes.  Frank knew this.
