What's Dweezil's favorite Zappa album?
I've always wondered what you thought about that Dweezil.
I remember reading somewhere that the concert series from "You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 2" was one of Frank's favorite sets. What do you think?
I don't know what Frank's favorite records were. I did ask him what his favorite composition he ever wrote was. He mentioned Strictly Genteel. My favorite records, in no particular order are: Zappa In New York, Apostrophe, Over Nite Sensation, Freak Out, Absolutely Free, Yellow Shark, Sheik Yer Bouti, Roxy And Elsewhere, Hot Rats, Chunga's Revenge, Bongo Fury. I like them all but these have always stood out for me. DZ
My favourite is Strictly Genteel, especially the You Cant Do That...Vol 6 version. Play this loud and it sounds really awesome.
My favourites in no particular order are....One Size Fits All, Roxy & Elsewhere, You Can't Do That..Vol 2, You Are What You Is, Freak Out, Hot Rats, Sheik Yerbouti, Joe's Garage acts 1-3 and now Philly 76. Then there's the others which I like for certain reasons songs, movements etc. But we could be here all night if I go on.
So much good stuff.
You folks were AWESOME last night at the Welmont Theater. My first record of your Dad's was Hot Rats, I think I was 16 and smokin something. I remember saying to myself, WTF? This stuff is crazy good, I was still a puppy with playing guitar. I believe I was only playing for about 4 or 5 years at the time. I had an old Kay and a Kent that were so hard to play because of the reach, yet at the time I really had no idea. I just thought I couldn't really play, or that I would never truly be able to because it seemed so difficult to do. Little did I know it was because they really were not the quality instruments like I own today.
I have quite a collection, maybe someday this summer I can show you a few in the Catskills. Just let me know when and I'm there! P.S. I LOVE Shelia's talent and persona, she really made me so crazy last night with her talent I thought I was going to lose my mind at how d**n great she was/is. I also wanted to say, THANKS to having some of the most talented folks I've had the pleasure of hearing in a long d**n time. I think Frank would be very proud of what you're doing, for him, for yourself, and more importantl…Read more
I was just listening to Make A Jazz Noise Here and today this is my favorite. What a tight band. I feel this band could play anything. I love the jazz twist to some of the standards.
Den
I lean towards the Lather era stuff like Studio Tan, Waka, Grand Wazoo, Orchestral Favorites, and Sleep Dirt stuff the most but also love Joe's Garage, Roxy, and Lumpy Gravy. I tell ya I learned a lot about blues drumming from Bongo Fury which was the first FZ album I bought by myself. The way Terry does that half open hi hat thing is so beautiful.
John--good point about the Strictly Genteel from YCDTOSA 6. Believe it or not I actually cried when I heard that in 1992, so you can imagine how emotional I get nowadays!!
When I first bought the London Symphony Orchestra volume 1&2 Zappa CD. Strictly Genteel put a lump in my throat instantly, and have always thought of the piece as being Franks epic.
I don't know if I can pick a favorite FZ album...it's too difficult, plus it's also mood dependent.
I go through phases where all I'll listen to are LSO/Yellow Shark, then it will be SUaPYG/Guitar/Trance-Fusion, etc.
My all-time favorite phase is definitely Over-Nite Sensation/Apostrophe/Roxy/One Size Fits All though. I've been listening to Roxy/YCDTOSA Vol 2 a lot lately.
I love them all but if I had to choose 5:
Hot Rats, Grand Wazoo, Waka Jawaka, Zappa In New York & Apostrophe(')
In no particular order
