Frank Gambale

Hey Dweezil, I was reading an interview you did a few years back with Steve Vai in Guitar World (August of 2005, I believe), and you mentioned learning some stuff from Frank Gambale. Did you just order his DVD's? Or is there more to the story? I'm considering to buy one of his instructional discs, because I feel that I'm in a rut, as a guitarist. Like, I feel as if I rely too heavily on the pentatonic scale. I often watch the ZPZ DVD along with a guitar, and work on improv, and I feel like I do better. Especially on tracks like "The Torture Never Stops", "Son of Orange County", and "Inca Roads".

Thanks,

Dweezil

I did just order his DVDs. They are all excellent and worth the money and time spent. Another great book is An Improviser's OS - Wayne Krantz. You might also like Sheets Of Sound. Go for it!

I would highly recommend getting the Slonimsky Thesaurus for Scales and Melodic Patterns! This was from a recommendation out of the Larry Coryell Power Jazz book I got for my son. Ever since I got him these two books he has improved exponentially!

I am always looking for secrets to getting out of that pentatonic box. I'll put some Gambale on my Amazon wish list. Thanks for the recommendation.

here's another vote for Gambale's own materials, and the two Sheets of Sound books by Jack Zucker, which take Gambale's thing to the next level. If your goal is to sweep/economy pick like Gambale, be sure your alternat picking technique is solid first! If you're like me at all, you'll find sweeping very very hard to control.

Dreamtime is a nice piece of music, one of the better guitar instrumentals I've heard lately.  It sounds like something FZ would have done.
