What Does DZ/ZPZ/ZFT Think of "Frank Zappa's Jukebox?"
What Does DZ/ZPZ/ZFT Think of "Frank Zappa's Jukebox?"
I just got this CD the other day, a UK production that states it is not authorized by the FZ estate. For those of us who have read up on FZ and his background and influences, I think this is a nice collection of many of those songs we've seen cited. There are songs by Varese, Eric Dolphy, Little Richard, Clarence Brown, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Webern, etc. So, what do the current FZ musicmakers and the family think of this recording? What do the FZ/DZ fanatics think?
Being a HUGE fan of the stuff Frank was a huge fan of, I think that--on the one hand--it's not a bad idea. But it's important to remember (full disclaimer here) that the set IS unauthorized, and the producers do not have the right to use the image of FZ that adorns the sleeve (the copyright on FZ's image is owned by the ZFT).
The music, however, gets a 10 out of 10. Hope they're paying their royalties! :-)
I find this CD's cover art very strange. At even the slightest glance it's clearly FZ, with the long hair and the iconic moustache/goat combo. But you look at the photo more closely and it's out of focus, and Frank's eyes are 3/4 closed, like the photo caught him in a blink or something. Strange.
I have to agree...it definitely has that "photo outtake" aroma. Yet another reason this set might upset the ZFT ;-)
It's probably the only photo they could get their hands on that they didn't have to pay any fees for permission to use.
Ha!! Very true Rugby! See? That's why the ZFT wants their rights to be respected, so that (among many other things) these sub-par pictures don't get out there :-)
