This was probably the best ZPZ show I have seen thus far. The thing that struck me most was how relaxed and spontaneous Dweezil and the band were, as evidenced by the audience participation of the dancing girl and Evan. The song selection was awesome...Wild Love/Yo Mama was one of many highlights. Hoping that ZPZ swings through NY come Halloween....
The best night of my life thank you sososoooososooso much
One very fond memory of live Frank Zappa concerts is when Frank opened with guitar instrumentals. The band would vamp, FZ followed walking out Les Paul in hand and many a NY Finest Crazy Type Person would scream "Zappa, Zappa" as FZ hit the stag, so when I had heard the band rehearse "The Deathless" "Mystery Roach" SEGUE at sound check I knew something special was in the air. As one can see in the published Westbury Set List that was in part the design of the program. Dweezil played lots of his Jimmy Page 1958 Les Paul throughout the evening and but also gave many of hos other Deathless Horsie's their workouts throughout the evening.
Secondly another tradition with FZ and NY Crowds is Audience Participation. As you can see by Dweezil's Note Comment that too was in part layered into the program on several number. One gal who I believe was wearing a red/orange blouse had a fine display of Terpsichore throughput the program so when the band went into "Keep It Greasy" she had been asked to come up, she delivered all in the true Greek Conceptual Realm. She left the stage just as the band went into the 19/16 Solo Segment and Scheila continued in the spirit of the finest Terpsichorean Ejectamenta that not only exists in Zappa's Universe galactic realm but this here comment though wishes the spirit of Jean-Marc Nattier could paint that for all eternity for the less fortunate parts of the world. Continuing on the theme of Audience Participation a young guitarist that appeared to be a middle aged teenager did a fine job soloing on Dweezil's Gibson SG. This kid did all the notes and was quite confident in his performance. While the kid soloed Dweezil applied the FZ Notch Filter Wah Technique to attenuate what was happening.
Thirdly in the food category which Dweezil makes note of the fine catering at Westbury Music Hall I feel "Ravioli" should be the word of the day. After sound check I took out the Vaultmeister, Pless & Rudy for a little local culinary adventure where the establishment made many different type of Ravioli. On this evening Duck, Artichoke, Asparagus & Beef were the ingredients that conceptually aligned with a little bit of the evolution of the bands newly added material. You see while so many people may understand the common cheese ravioli unless one takes a good look at the diversity the music is so much more than performances of arrangements from studio and live albums. Dweezil the master chef and his band have once again prepared a meal of most complex diversity that one must see live throughout the evolution process to get a very good idea of just how good not only the raviolis are made but the sauce that goes along with it. While the new Dweezil Zappa 2CD "Return Of The Son Of..." gives a very good sampling of some of the live performances from the past two previous years here in 2010 the band has reached many new frontiers of higher ambient domains.
Of final note after Dweezil had once again signed his last of many autographs of the evening both on stage and at the back stage door he and I got the chance to talk of the many accomplishments here in 2010 and new directions that the band have ahead of them. One such item that I can share is the enhancement of the Audio Area. There are so many compositions DZPZ have been performing that many fans have not yet had a chance to see live as of yet or hear good audio samples of. While it is a bit difficult to do on the road on the level of mass audio sample documentation the creation of such are one of which we all can continue to look our for. We had discussed many topics of exciting things to come which for the sake of this review I will leave as food for thought that are many seedlings. My pre-sale seats were fantastic. Those that know Westbury Music Hall know those Red Seats that are in the 8th & 9th Row. Section A Row H was absolute amazing. Great job by Glynn Wood. The sound was superb eliminating any previous unhappiness of those times where I was just too close at Westbury. When the stage turned for some that creates a loss feel of front and center but Schelia, Ben & Pete did a great job moving around onto the tarmac area and even out into the audience and that done sporadically throughout the evening reels the viewers back in making them feel even closer to what is going on the stage. Even Joe Travers went out and gave his drum sticks to "Miss Terpsichore" when Dweezil and the band noticed her great dancing long before her live-on-stage in NY moment. What is happening right now is all so very much part of an ongoing evolution, Very Special Raviolis indeed!
I brought my 6 year old son Jesse last night... It was his first concert ever and I made sure to get seats up close. He was so excited and drew a picture for Dweezil. I pushed the picture onto the stage and Dweezil held it up and announced my son's name as "the artist". Jesse was embarassed but he asked me on the ride home if he was famous...when he wakes up I'll make sure he knows what a cool thing happened to him. Overall it was an experience with my son that we'll both never forget. Thanks Dweezil for making it so special. I hope this will be the first of many shows we'll see together and that he is as passionate about music as I am...
most amazing and enriching musical extravaganza of my life, no amount of gratitude can be displayed through a computer... but a thank you will suffice for now
wow Dweezil - thanks for an amazing show! A Deathless Horsie Opener and A I'm the Slime Encore, and Evan - you were sooo cool - on stage and after the show as well- man what a treat to hear you play on Cosmic Debris! You made us all proud!! Dweezil - Please come back and play this venue again!
Thanks for the show and almost every song on the requested set
Little house i used to live in/Latex solar beef was a highlight for me.
Evan, and the dancing woman. You two rock thanks for the fun.
Great show Dweezil and gang! Evan, now you must join the people who played with DZ group and you will be an honoured member. You will remember this the rest of your life - you are lucky - and so were we - you did yourself, your friends and young guitar players everywhere proud. The rotating stage was fun (second time I saw you there -- too bad it wasnt packed - should have been). It was fun to watch Billy, Joe and Chris from behind as we really got to see them play. This band (and Frank's music) is about chops - it was fun to see everyone's chops displayed by getting all the angles. We were behind Joe when he did his Pimp solo -watching his legs pumps those bass drum pedals to do a bass drum roll was amazing and watching Billy play vibes on Peaches was great. Thanks for another great show!
Mr Zappa,
Sir..you need to come to Long Island a lot more. I was the humble guy with the "pets" jacket, looking for your endorsement. I was looking for Mr. Travers as well, who turned around, but alas . . no sharpie. drummers.... How about some Stony Brook shows Sir? I'll bring a sharpie for Joe this time..... I promise....

Hi Dweezil -
Cant wait for the show tonight! It would be great to see the first Sofa of the tour tonight! Perhaps for the last encore?
Michael - I have seen a few shows at Westbury over the years and never experienced or heard anyone mention any obstructed views. I had similar seats to you the last time ZPZ played here, and the seats were excellent. I am in section C row H - say hello if you have a chance.
Eric
I can't wait either. I come on here every day to see what subtle changes are occurring in the setlist. I have one question about The Theatre. When I bought the tickets, there was a disclaimer stating that "these seats (Sec. D - Row H)are behind the orchestra pit." Does this mean the view is obstructed in any way? Is it pertinent to this show or just a general Westbury Theatre disclaimer?
BTW to anyone who needs tickets, there are still some available according to Ticketmonster.
Front row! I cannot wait! Dweezil....remember that kid in the late 80's who used to bring you green balloons?? That was me!
