WTF!.  I think that's French.  Who frickin' uses that language anymore.

Joe A

Huh.  Did not notice until now, but that is Alan Holdsworth on stage with Ed.  That would have been something to see.

Joe A

Great story. I have a picture of that purple guitar you mention in the story.  Edpacer

Twist and Frug

I enjoyed hearing you share the long version of the Eddie Van Halen visit in Phoenix before you played Eruption for us a few years back. The part about the rock star apparition at the door was particularly entertaining.

Kevin O.

that is such an amazing story. and EVH comes across as a genuinely nice guy too.

Martin Eisele

You know, Dweezil, you should call Eddie and just say hi. I bet he would appreciate that, especially if he has been through a lot.

AK

Fantastic story.

rbnmom

Wow, what a touching story.  Thanks for sharing.

Tommy Quirk

That could be one of the coolest celeb/little kid stories that I have ever heard.  I really hope that you re-connect with Eddie very soon.

Beggz

Thank you for the update, Dweezil!

SQUID_DECOR

What a great story to go with that guitar. I think Ed should put out a solo album. But that's just me. I can listen to his solo's all day long.

Dweezil that's great news that you've reconnected with Ed and it's good to hear he's doing well, there are strong rumours in the UK that Van Halen will be playing the Download festival, I really hope they do I've never seen them
I've seen David Lee Roth quite a few times though.

Dweezil

A little update, this story made it's way to Ed's e-mail inbox. I recently had the opportunity to visit with him and discuss a few things from the back in the day. It was great fun. He's doing very well and he's got some exciting new things he's working on.

Oakwood was Rocking back then...

Sorry about the orphan phrase at the end of my comment (it has been a long day). Is there anyway to edit these once they are posted? Thanks! Jon

Having recently viewed your performance of Eruption making the rounds on Youtube (and elsewhere, I presume), it's great to read a more complete version of the Eddie Van Halen story. Even accounting for your lifelong immersion in music, I can only imagine how surreal those experiences must have felt as a twelve-year-old.

Reminds me of a less dramatic yet nevertheless meaningful experience I had at the tiny New Hampshire boarding school I attended in the mid 80s. My roomate and I used to open our dormroom windows in the afternoon and play Penguin in Bondage excrutiatingly loud while we sang along (the best part was yelling "BOING!"). Shortly after one of these command performances, our classmate Shon Greenblat walked into the room and handed me a photo taken of him mock arm wrestling your dad whilst - I believe - visiting your family in CA.

Apart from the six degrees of separation shock of it all, what I remember most was thinking "wow - that's Frank Zappa, my idol, acting like a normal dad/parent in his backyard with one of my friends." It was a great moment and something I remind Shon of every now and then . . .

What a great story! Everything you've said about him is right on as I've been fortunate to meet him a few times, but not nearly to the extent you have. He's extremely gracious to his fans.
