The trem does knock it out of tune. I can use mine for a little bit of slight trem but nothing too crazy. I rarely touch it to be honest. Otherwise the guitar stays in tune pretty well.
I have a VOS SG / LES PAUL that looks just like this one and it looks and plays fantastic. BUT! only once i have put the maestro trem in just the right position, tuned up and then i have to hope i don't touch it again until it goes back in its case otherwise the tuning goes out immediately. Does anyone have any tips on setting the maestro up so it can actually be touched or god forbid maybe used for very light trem duties?? I recently noticed that Dereck Trucks has removed the bar and replaced it with a normal tailpiece but left the large metal maestro tail block i'm getting to the point where this is looking to be the only option but i would much prefer to keep the maestro bar if i can make it stay in tune. Please help!!!
was franks baby snakes sg a neck thru or a glu in neck like the normal sgs? love the tone on apostrophe and over-nite sensation. in fact nearly obsessed about it.... help me out Dweezil.....
I got it in my head at some point that the Baby Snakes SG wasn't really a Gibson at all, but a completely custom guitar built for Frank. Body and everything. Any truth to that, or did I dream that?
Sorry to disappoint you folks, this is definitely not a vintage instrument. It was made in 2006 by Gibson for me to play on tour. It looks older than it's years. Since I am not a vintage expert at all I have no idea what year it's supposed to represent or anything. I just know I love to play it.
so what year is this? all original or composite? I have been researching the 60's SG's with the idea to buy one of these great vintage guitars someday. and what I can tell of this is it could be a '63 because that was the last year they had the "Les Paul" bell cover on the head but never see one of them with this Gibson Vibrola tailpiece with the Lyre cover plate - also never heard or seen one on a '61 or '62. almost all the 61-63 models I have seen info on only had the side to side tremolo tailpiece. but by '64 all the standard SG's that had a tremelo had this style seen here. so this should be extremely rare. and the glorious walnut finish too. should not show any checking like the cherry finish usually does. so what's the story on this fab guitar? if its ever for sale I would like 1st dibs!
I just got the ZPZ FanPak DVD/CD thingy. Watching you play this guitar (even though it's not Frank's SG) really makes a resonant connection with the past. You, the guitar, the amazing band...it's like Franks band, but it's also unlike Frank's band, if you know what I mean. Great guitar for playing great music...
I remember seeing this being played live at a show in Vicar Street in Dublin. I was amazed that it was used for the entire show ....and it stayed in tune !! SGs have always had a special place in my heart growing up an Angus Young fan.
I guess this is a VOS reissue SG which looks like the Angus Young and Robbie Kreiger, are the pick ups different on these models-there must be a Dweezil model -pronto!!
I've always loved your dad's SG, and this one is just as beautiful. My brother used to work at a music store in the early 80's, and I went in there every once in awhile to gab, but mainly to stare at the Gibson SG that was just like this one and think, "Frank plays this one." I don't play a note, but if I woulda had the money, I sure would have bought it!
Soup 'N Old Clothes....... Having just finished a wonderful Malaysian and Thai dinner I finally had a chance to take a good look at the DZ Gear page here at DZW. Seeing that this page was published on December 11th this makes for a fine addition to the Zappalogy that has taken place on my birthday. While the large selection of Guitar Magazines in my sub basement does indeed prove within itself many fine remnants of FZ NON-Foods, FZ Full magazine tributes and but also plenty of Randy Rhoads, in what decades of guitar magazines and the back cover of DZs My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama CD could not accomplish DweezilZappaWordlDotCom has now shown the ability to Crush All Boxes. DZ Gear, Guitarland and Bootcamp certainly are planting seeds for the guitar-community-at-large to ignite their souls in harmony. While it all is evolving it's quite obvious the growth is being done with the sternest intent of a really fine icing anointment utensil. While I myself might gather up a spoon whereby taking a photo of my 1976 Gibson Les Paul to share in the general photo area unfortunately the sleeping dog so to speak rarely barks at the other dogs…Read more

My very first guitar was a cheapo Kay SG copy. I asked my Dad for an electric guitar for my 15th birthday. I thought hey Frank plays one so that is what I want. Since Mom & Dad were Divorced I think he wanted to get me something that would drive Mom nuts. (but Mom was real supportive of any kind of music in out house)
I also had a friend who had a Ventura SG copy. I've never played a real one.
I thought I'd read in a blog somewhere that you'd purchased this guitar in a vintage shop, must be confusing it with another guitar. In the 9 times I've seen you & ZPZ band members, you've played this at every show-it is indeed, the 'rock' of the show!!

I noticed on a recent video from the L.A amp show you have flipped the bridge pickup round has it made a dramatic difference to the sound ?
@effett I like your Pheonix Baby Snakes SG was it made by Phantom guitars ?
Hello there :-)
What about the famous Phoenix-SG?
This is mine ... not from Phoenix, but mine ;-)

thanks for the prompt and honest reply. I suppose this could be a Gibson custom shop special vintage reissue type thing.
the feel of the guitar should be just like the old SG's Frank used.
I can't imagine you would ever part with this. but if you do its certainly the most desirable guitar you got up here I see.

Love the look and sound of this guitar.
SG's just ROCK!!! Plain and simple. I've got a Gibson Custom Shop 60's SG Special that I wouldn't trade for anything in the world.
